- Shelves:
12mm generally holds up well for shelving, though a shelf carrying
particularly heavy loads thick blankets, stacked luggage benefits from
staying closer to 18mm rather than cutting down purely to save cost.
- Back panels:
6mm is usually sufficient here, since back panels aren't load-bearing in
the same way, but they still need to be rigid enough to keep the whole
unit from flexing.
- Shutters and doors:
Thickness here is more about finish and rigidity than raw load 12–18mm
depending on the door size and whether it's a swing or sliding design.
Using 12mm everywhere to save money
is the single most common carpenter shortcut, and it's the reason doors
misalign and shelves start to sag well before the plywood itself has actually
failed.
Core
wood matters as much as the grade stamped on the sheet
Two sheets can carry the same MR or
BWP grade and still perform very differently, because the grade tells you about
moisture resistance, not about what's inside the sheet. A hardwood core denser,
tighter grain holds screws and hinges far better over thousands of open-close
cycles than a softwood or mixed-core sheet, even when both carry identical
grade certification.
This matters most on hinges and
slider mounting points, which are opened and closed daily for years. A
softwood-core sheet can start to lose screw grip around these points well
before the surface shows any visible sign of wear — which is exactly why a

How
to actually check you're getting genuine plywood

because a fake or mismatched ISI mark makes the entire grade discussion

Check the ISI mark is stamped, not
printed loosely on a sticker.
A genuine BIS-certified sheet has the mark embossed or clearly printed as part
of the manufacturing process, along with the IS standard number (IS 303 for MR,
IS 710 for marine/BWP). A sticker that looks like it could be peeled off or
doesn't match the rest of the batch is worth questioning.
Look at the edge of the sheet, not
just the face. The face veneer can look identical
across grades — the edge tells you more. Check for visible gaps, voids, or
uneven layers in the cross-section. A well-manufactured sheet has tight, even
layers with no visible gaps between plies.
Ask for the batch or invoice details
to match the certification. A
reputable manufacturer's product should be traceable — the grade, thickness,
and certification on your invoice should match what's actually delivered, not
just what was quoted verbally at the counter.
Be wary of a price significantly
below the market range for a stated grade.
BWP and marine-grade plywood involve genuinely more expensive resin and
manufacturing processes than MR. If a BWP-grade quote comes in close to MR
pricing, something in that claim usually doesn't hold up.
